199 out of 200 applicants for every programming job can't write code at all. I repeat: they can't write any code whatsoever.

An oldie but goodie from coding horror. But the fix is easy: always have them code for you in the interviews.
Can you imagine this being true for other professions? Though I suspect it might actually be.

After hearing some stories, I guess a can conclude that it's (nearly) the same in the medical field too.

I don't do much hiring myself these days, but when I did, it seemed that a significant segment of candidates are expert at being great candidates. Whether through natural talent or trial-and-error they become really good at marketing and presenting themselves into an offer letter. Eventually they fall apart when called on to execute and deliver, but usually after some time has passed and the company's invested resources and money in them.
